Wetsuit thickness & fit: a quick Vancouver Island guide
Choose for the water, not just the weather. Thickness numbers describe neoprene in millimetres: a 5/4 typically uses thicker panels through the body and thinner panels for movement. Fit, lining, seams, wind and session length all affect comfort.
Which thickness?
Get the fit right
Start with the brand's size chart and your height, chest, waist and hip measurements. Aim for a close, even fit without loose folds or gaps at the lower back, crotch or underarms. Seat the knees and crotch fully, then squat and mimic paddling: movement should feel snug, not pinched or restricted. Check neck, wrist and ankle seals. Between sizes? Ask us to compare cuts rather than sizing up for extra room.
Hood, boots & gloves
For 8–10°C, plan to try all three. Choose an integrated hood or a compatible separate 3mm hood; compare 5mm and 7mm boots for fit and board feel. Compare 3mm and 5mm gloves for warmth preference and dexterity. Accessories should fit closely without squeezed toes or fingers.
