Hobie Surf and SUP

Its with no exaggeration that Hobie is considered the master of watercraft.

Hobie Alter shaped his first board out of his parent’s garage. Balsa wood was the material of choice back then in 1950 and Hobie’s woodworking skills shined through. Although beautiful, the wooden surfboards were extremely hard to ride, the main issue was their weight. So a few years later, and with the help of his friend Gordon “Grubby” Clark, Hobie set out to solve this weight problem. It wasn’t long until Hobie discovered or literally invented the polyurethane foam surfboard. This new material was lighter, faster, and more user friendly. Hobie literally revolutionized the surfboard overnight.

In 1958 the first Hobie shop opened its doors and by the mid 60’s the top surfers in California were all riding Hobies and a part of the Hobie Surf Team. Phil Edwards, Joey Cabell, Corky Carroll, Micky Munoz, Joyce Hoffman, Joey Hamasaki, Gary Propper, Billy Hamilton and Herbie Fletcher, just to name a few!

In the late 1960’s Hobie put his Polyurethane technology and knowledge into the sailing world. And what Polyurethane did for surfing it did for sailing as well. The Hobie revolution was in full swing and soon followed the famous Hobie Cat sailboat. The Hobie Cat was light, fast, easy to sail and soon became extremely popular.

Hobie Alters vision and innovations revolutionized the surfing and sailing world.

“The dream born on the beach in 1950 has become reality not just for Hobie but for new generations of dreamers, all of whom continue to spell fun in the sun, the surf and the sand with a flying capital H”.
